Notes
The notebooks of Edith Pell, wife of St. Andrew's first Headmaster, are the subject of this issue's cover and main story. As we see in photos, drawings, news clippings, and text excerpts, Mrs. Pell carefully and humorously documented daily life in the early years of the School. Profiles Holly Whyte ’35 and Peter Brown ’40 are created from scrapbook material. Also in this issue, Dean of Faculty Will Speers describes the strength of the SAS faculty with classroom and dorm vignettes and key questions for the future. Veteran teacher and coach Bob Colburn shares his favorite SAS sports memories. These include girls' crew winning the Henley Women's Regatta in 1997, boys' basketball winning the DISC championships in 1995, and boys' soccer winning the State Championship in 1981 as well as four more wins over rival Tower Hill (football in 1964, field hockey in 1986, baseball in 1998, and girls' lacross in 2004). Alexandra Cox ’97 describes SummerQuest, a program for Delaware youth that has taken place on campus for five years. Tad Roach shares remarks, Michael Loessner ’84 describes his role with the construction of the O'Brien Arts Center, and Sandy Abbott discusses her long career with the School. We see photos of the Evening of Stewardship, David DeSalvo's ordination as an Episcopal priest, a performance of The Boys from Syracuse, and other campus events and visitors. Donald Tucker ’41 and Albert Van Petten ’42 are remembered.
